Vlas is een natuurlijk materiaal dat al eeuwenlang wordt verbouwd in het gebied dat zich uitstrekt van Noord-Frankrijk tot Zeeland in ons eigen land. Het wordt gebruikt voor de vervaardiging van linnen textiel en stevige papier- en kartonsoorten. Ook wordt het gebruikt als isolatiemateriaal en als toevoeging in houtvezelplaten. Tot in de 18e eeuw was vlas, naast wol, de belangrijkste vezel voor textielproductie. Tegenwoordig is het grotendeels verdrongen door katoen, maar het materiaal staat weer in de belangstelling en vindt nog steeds nieuwe toepassingen, zoals als effectvezel bij vilten.

Flax is a natural material that has been cultivated for centuries in the area that extends from northern France to Zeeland in our own country. It is used for the manufacture of linen textiles and sturdy paper and cardboard types. It is also used as an insulation material and as an additive in wood fiber boards. Until the 18th century, flax was, next to wool, the most important fiber for textile production. Nowadays it is largely supplanted by cotton, but the material is back in the spotlight and is still finding new applications, such as effect fiber for felting.
